I am Lecturer in Literatures in English in the Department of English Literature at the University of Reading. I am active in research and teaching. I also run ad hoc training on inclusive pedagogy. I have previously served as Departmental Director of Academic Tutoring (2018-2020) and led the widening participation work of the School of Literature and Languages (2014-2017). From 2011-2014 I was Newsletter Editor of the international and interdisciplinary Postcolonial Studies Association, and from 2014-2017 its Vice-Chair.
What unites my research interests, pedagogic practices, widening participation activities and approach to my administrative duties is a core commitment to social justice. I follow African American theorist bell hooks in viewing education as “the practice of freedom” (Teaching to Transgress, 1994). As an educator I have an opportunity – indeed, a responsibility – to redistribute power and resources to those who are otherwise disadvantaged or marginalised. The pages on this website detail my efforts towards this goal.
